I have been having so many ideas this last week of ways this organization can make not just a difference abroad but at home as well. One of my goals with The Deaf Dream is to raise awareness for Deaf culture in general. Don’t get me wrong, we have come so far as a nation from the days of Alexander Graham Bell, tied hands to prevent signing, and Deaf in mental institutions. However, there is so much more to be done!
This organization is not just about empowering Deaf in marginalized backgrounds, it’s about promoting the idea to the world that Deaf are fully capable human beings who can do EVERYTHING except hear. The Deaf community is a cultural minority with it’s unique language, culture, and history.
One of the joys of my Semester at Sea experience was to live with open minded students for over 3 months. They were so willing to learn about the Deaf as a minority and people to be understood rather than a disability to be fixed. I hope that any of you friends, family, especially those of you new to the concept of Deaf culture–will ask questions in the comments.
Life is oh-so-good my friends!
